On 11/23/09 members of the Tenafly Fire Department participated in a hands on Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) Drill at the Bergenfield Fire Training Center.  The Drill was the second part of a two night training course led by Bob Athanas of SAFE-IR INC.  Athanas a senior instructor and the president of SAFE-IR INC has 30yrs of Firefighting experience and is currently assigned to Rescue 3 in the Bronx and has been with the FDNY for 20yrs.  Athanas a co-worker and friend of Assistant Chief Eisner volunteered his time to teach the members of TFD.  The first night of the class firefighters are taught the theory of thermal imaging technology, the applications of the technology, and tactical considerations.  The hands on training at the training center focused on the 3 types of thermal imaging cameras used by TFD in a live burn environment.  Athanas showed the advantages and disadvantages of each camera and their common applications.  This invaluable training was much appreciated by the members of TFD and a special thanks goes out to Bob Athanas.  Visit safe-ir.com for training information.
